Canberra Raiders lock in three key players, extending Jed Stuart’s deal through 2029 after 28 first-grade appearances since 2015.
The Canberra Raiders have finalized agreements with three players, bringing back Jed Stuart, Malachi Smith, and Mark Tuialii for the upcoming seasons. Stuart, the most seasoned of the group, had a contract option that would have kept him with the club until 2027. Instead, the Raiders extended his deal to cover the entire 2029 season.
Since joining in mid-2015, Stuart has appeared in 28 first-grade games for the Raiders, often serving as a fringe player. His new contract guarantees his presence for at least three more years. With Sebastian Kris expected to depart for the Gold Coast Titans, Stuart’s role may grow in significance next season.
Stuart shared his enthusiasm for the extension, stating, “I’m thrilled. He also pointed to the club’s emerging talent as a key reason for his optimism.

Smith, a rising dummy-half who made his debut in the final round of 2026 against North Queensland, has also re-signed, this time through 2028. His contract aligns with the club’s plans, as he could form a partnership with Owen Pattie in 2027 if Tom Starling leaves for the Manly Sea Eagles. Smith described his debut as unexpected and emphasized the trust he places in both the coaching staff and his teammates.
Tuialii, an outside back yet to play in the first-grade side, now has a clear path to his debut next season. He earned the NSW Cup coaches award this year and has been secured through 2028 alongside Smith. Tuialii praised the Raiders as a “family” and acknowledged senior players like Simi Sasagi and Matt Timoko for their mentorship.
Stuart’s Contract Option and Future Role
The Raiders declined Stuart’s contract option that would have secured him through 2027, opting instead for an extension covering the 2029 season. His experience and familiarity with the club’s system could become more central next year, especially if Sebastian Kris moves to the Gold Coast Titans. Stuart’s 11 first-grade tries and proven durability suggest he will remain a key contributor for at least three more years.
