The Cleveland Guardians’ return to action after the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline was marred by a rough performance, as they fell to the New York Mets 6-2 on Tuesday, August 4, at Progressive Field.
The Guardians had a promising start, loading the bases in the first inning but failing to score.
Things took a turn for the worse in the second inning.
Early Error Proves Costly
With two outs, a ground ball was hit to third baseman Gabriel Arias, who was filling in for the injured José Ramírez.
Arias picked up the ball but made a throwing error, allowing the runner to reach base safely.
This error sparked a surge for the Mets, as another runner got on base before Luis Torrens homered to give them a 3-0 lead.

Manager Stephen Vogt said postgame, “I think he was trying to keep the throw low… Just kind of misjudged how fast the runner was running and had to put something on it last second…”
The error gave the Mets early momentum, and they went on to score runs in the third and fourth innings, taking a 5-1 lead.
Arias struggled for the rest of the game, going 0-for-4 at the plate with two strikeouts.
Guardians’ Offense Fails to Capitalize
Starter Joey Cantillo’s groove was disrupted in the second inning, and he gave up seven hits, five runs, two earned runs, and two walks across five innings.
Vogt said, “It was kind of an interesting outing from Joey… We extended the inning with an error, but then he didn’t make pitches afterwards.”
The Guardians’ offense tried to battle back, scoring runs in the third and fifth innings, but it wasn’t enough.

They finished with seven hits and seven walks, with outfielder Jo Adell standing out in his debut, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.
Adell, acquired in a trade with the Angels on Monday, said, “As soon as I walked in here I could feel the intensity.”
Rookie Chase DeLauter also maintained his elite play, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and three walks drawn.
Guardians Look to Bounce Back
The Guardians, now a game below .500, will look to get back on track when they face the Mets again on Wednesday night at 6:40 p.m. EST.
As they try to regain their footing, they will rely on players like Adell and DeLauter to provide a spark.
