The Parramatta Eels are preparing to make a significant play for Bradman Best if the Knights star does not sign a new deal by November 1. Best’s future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, with reports indicating he is unlikely to re-sign with Newcastle before that deadline. The Eels view Best as a long-term solution for their outside backs, and journalist Michael Carayannis confirmed on Fox Sports’ NRL 360 that the Parramatta side has earmarked him as their primary target for November 1.

Free agency creates a rush for talent

The approaching free agency period is expected to be the biggest in the sport’s history due to an expanding salary cap and the influx of the PNG Chiefs, who have significant financial resources. While the Chiefs have already secured players like Alex Johnston, Brian To’o, Zac Lomax, and Joseph Manu, other clubs are poised to raid departing lists. This financial situation has increased urgency for the Knights, who are already linked to Jack Bostock, as they attempt to retain their own talent.

The Knights are facing a difficult retention battle. Best recently stated he is in no rush to commit to a new contract, focusing instead on performing well with the current squad. He told 9NEWS a fortnight ago that he is not worried about the speculation surrounding November 1, preferring to concentrate on the game on the field. Best’s previous contract situation saw him wait until after the deadline to test the market before re-signing with Newcastle, but the Eels are determined to secure his services this time to stabilize their roster.

Roles in peril

The Eels are one of those sides, with coach Jason Ryles and his recruitment staff still looking to find a winning formula after a dismal 2026 campaign. The Eels are losing plenty in their outside backs at the end of 2026, with Sean Russell and Apa Twidle both heading to the Perth Bears, while Josh Addo-Carr’s future is uncertain after a recent off-field alleged incident. Brian Kelly, Araz Nanva, Jordan Samrani and Bailey Simonsson all remain off-contract at the end of 2027 among a much larger total list at the Eels, so there is plenty of scope for Ryles to shake his squad up.
